Bhala sit tan-Natura 2000 id-Dwejra hija magħrufa għall-ġeoloġija, paleontoloġija, ekoloġija, ornitoloġija u bħala pajsaġġ. Matul iż-żmien l-attività ntensa tal-bniedem wasslet għal sfreġju fuq wiċċ is-sit. Id-Dwejra Life Project tnieda f'April 2004 bil-ħsieb li tieqaf il-ħsara li kienet qegħda ssir lill-ambjent waqt li l-ekonomija lokali tieħu spinta billi jitjiebu s-servizzi turistiċi. Fit-twettieq tal-proġett in-Nature Trust ( Malta) kellha l-appoġġ shih tal-MEPA u tal-WWF Italy kif ukoll tal-Ministeru t'Ghawdex u tal-Kunsill Lokali ta' San Lawrenz. Bil-għan li tikseb il-fondi meħtieġa in-Nature Trust (Malta) ressqet talba formali lill-Unjoni Ewropea biex il-proġett jiġi kkunsidrat taħt l-iskema Third Countries bir-riżultat li f'Mejju ta' l-2003 l-proġett kiseb l-approvazzjoni tat-tim evalwattiv tal-Life. Il-proġett gie fdat f'idejn id-Dwejra Steering Committee li qasam ix-xogħol f'erba' stadji:

Fl-ewwel stadju il-kumitat ħaseb biex jiġbor id-data li fuqha kellu jissejjes il-proġett.

It-tieni stadju kien wieħed ta' konsultazzjoni mas-sieħba kollha; għal dan il-għan saru numru ta' laqgħat ma' dawk kollha li kellhom xi nteress fil-proġett: l-entitajiet tat-turizmu ta' Malta u ta' Għawdex, l-għaqdiet ta' l-għaddasa, sidien tas-dgħajjes u tal- boathouses, Din l-Art Ħelwa, il-Kurja u oħrajn.

It-tielet stadju ffoka fuq xogħol ta' konservazzjoni bħal tiswija ta' ħitan tas-sejjieħ, ġbir ta' skart u arranġamenti għal parkeġġ ta' karozzi. Il-mod ta' kif kellhom jinqasmu ż-żoni tal-Marine Protected Area ġie ttrattat f'dan l-istadju wkoll.

Ir-raba' stadju kellu bħala mira il-preparazzjoni ta' senjalazzjoni, kwadri ta' spjega, videos bl-informazzjoni, fuljetti edukattivi u taħriġ ta' wardens u gwidi tas-sit.

Hu ttamat li meta l-proġett jitlesta, id-Dwejra tikseb il-klassifika ta' UNESCO World Heritage Site.    

Dwejra is an important Natura 2000 site known for its geological, palaeontological, ecological, ornithological and landscape value. Over the years intense human activity in the area resulted in the site's serious deterioration. The Dwejra Life Project started in April 2004 with the aims of reversing the degradation of the area, conserving the environment, providing a better tourist product and aiding the local economy. The main partners of Nature Trust (Malta) were MEPA - the local environment agency - and WWF Italy as well as two major stakeholders – the Ministry for Gozo and the San Lawrenz Local Council. To obtain the necessary financial resources Nature Trust ( Malta) decided to make a viable proposal to the European Union for consideration under the LIFE Third Countries scheme and in May2003 the LIFE evaluation team accepted the Dwejra project. The Dwejra Steering Committee planned the project in four stages:

Stage 1 involved the compilation of data which would serve as the base on which to plan the project;

Stage 2 consisted of the consultation process. Meetings were   held with all stakeholders such as the tourism authorities of Gozo and Malta, the diving associations, the boatmen, the fishermen, the tour operators, the boathouse owners, Din l-Art Ħelwa, the Church authorities and others;

Stage 3 focused on the implementation of conservation works such as the restoration of rubble walls, the clearing of debris and organizing parking. The zonation of the Marine Protected Area was also tackled at this stage;

Stage 4 dealt with signage, interpretation panels, information videos, education leaflets and the training of wardens and site guides.

When the project is completed it is hoped that Dwejra will be classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
