It-Torri tad-Dwejra nbena fi żmien il-Granmastru Lascaris; l-ispejjeż tħallsu mill-Università ta' Għawdex. It-torri, mibni fuq bażi kwadru ta' 13 bi 13–il metru, fih żewġ sulari b'kamra mdaqqsa fuq il-bejt li kienet isservi ta' porvlista. Meta nbena kellu żewġ skopijiet: biex jipproteġi l-bajja tad-Dwejra u biex jgħasses il-Ħaġra tal-Ġeneral fejn tikber il-pjanta mediċinali prezzjuża Għerq is-Sinjur ( Cynomorium coccineum). It-torri kien armat b'kanuni u munizzjon mill-Kavallieri ta' l-Ordni u fi żmenijiet normali kien ikollu gwarnigjon ta' tlett suldati. Il-lum it-torri jinsab f-idejn din l-NGO ambjentali u dan il-bini jservi biex jilqa' fih il-gwardjan tal-park u l-voluntiera ta' Din l-Art Ħelwa. The Dwejra coastal watch-tower was built in 1652 during the Grandmastership of Lascaris. Its building was financed by the Universita` of Gozo. It stands on a square base 13m by 13m, and has two floors and a room on the roof which held the powder store. It had two aims: to render Dwejra Bay secure against an enemy landing and to prevent unauthorized persons from landing on Fungus Rock to collect the precious “fungus melitensis” (cynomorium coccineum). The tower was armed by the Order with guns and ammunition and in normal times would have a garrison of three. It was occupied on and off by the military until recent times; it was garrisoned by the Royal Malta Fencible Artillery from 1839 to 1876 in which year it was abandoned until the First World War when the garrison was provided from the Royal Malta Artillery and the King’s Own Malta Regiment. Its last military role was played in World War II when it served as an Observation Post. In 1956 it was leased for 50 years to a private individual. Din l-Art Helwa, which now holds the trusteeship of the building, took the initiative to restore the tower which by the nineties had suffered serious deterioration. When the whole Dwejra area is turned into a nature park the tower will be manned by the park’s warden and Din l-Art Helwa volunteers so that it can assume its new role as a visitors’ centre.
