Il-baħar fl-inħawi tad-Dwejra u l-Qawra jħaddan fih varjetà kbira ta’ ħabitats li f’medda ta’ kosta ftit jew wisq ristretta jwasslu għal bijodiversità wiesa’. Fost il-ħabitats li nsibu f’dawn l-inħawi hemm uħud li għandhom valur konsiderevoli mill-aspett ekoloġiku waqt li oħrajn huma protetti jew rari ħafna. In-numru kbir ta’ speċi li nsibu taħt wiċċ l-ilma jagħmlu dan wieħed mill-aqwa ambjenti li għandna fil-Gżejjer Maltin għal għaddasa f’dak li għandu x’jaqsam mal-ġeomorfoloġija jew il-bijoloġija. Il-lokalità tista’ sservi wkoll bħala riżors edukattiv u bħala ċentru għal dawk interessati fil- bijoloġija tal-baħar.

Fejn il-baħar hu baxx, insibu tipi ta’ algi li jridu ħafna dawl, bħal Sea Firs. Fejn id-dawl ikun nieqes, bħal ma jkun f’fond ta’ 25 metru jew iktar, insibu tipi ta’ algi differenti iġifieri tipi li jifilħu jgħixu f’dawl baxx. Fid-daħliet u l-bajjiet b’baħar baxx l-ispeċi dominanti hi il-Lesser Neptune Grass waqt li fejn il-baħar hu aktar fond bħan-naħa ta’ wara l-Ħaġra tal-Ġeneral l-iktar komuni hi l-Posidonia oceanica. Il-flora u l-fawna ivarjaw skond il-fond u t-tip ta’ ħabitat u jinkludu, fost ħafna oħra, is-sea cucumbers, artikli, molluski, granċijiet, qroll, false corals, sponoż u tube-building worms. F’dawn l-inħawi niltaqgħu ma’ varjetà kbira ta’ ħut fosthom l-ispeċi pelagiċi kif ukoll l-ispeċi li jgħixu fil-qiegħ. Ta’ min ifaħħar l-inizzjativa li ħadet in-Nature Trust biex il-baħar fl-inħawi tad-Dwejra u l-Qawra ikun identifikat bħala Marine Protected Area. Bil-protezzjoni li ser ikollhom dawn il-ħabitats u l-ispeċji li jgħixu fihom dawn l-inħawi jkunu jistgħu iservu biex jissuplixxu żoni oħra tal-kosta li minħabba sajd bla rażan jew minħabba tniġġis ikkawżat mill-bniedem issa jinsabu neqsin minn ambjent naturali adegwat.

The sea in the Qawra/Dwejra area supports a wide range of habitat types and a high biodiversity concentrated along a relatively short stretch of coastline. A number of the habitats present in the Qawra/Dwejra area are of high ecological value, while others are rare and/or protected.
These underwater features serve as a backdrop for a diversity of species and together, the geomorphological and biological features of the area make this one of the best diving sites in the Maltese Islands, as well as a great educational resource for all those interested in marine biology.
A large variety of assemblages of photophilic algae (i.e. those that require ample light) occur in the Qawra/Dwejra area. In very shallow water, these are dominated by species of Sea Firs but many other algal occur. Where the light intensity is low, typically at depths greater than 25m, a different set of algal assemblages occur, characterised by sciaphilic species (i.e. those able to grow in low light).
In the Maltese Islands, some of the most important infralittoral habitats on soft bottoms are those of sea-grass meadows. In shallow waters at the head of bays and inlets, the dominant seagrass species is the Lesser Neptune-grass while in deeper waters it is the Neptune Grass (Posidonia oceanica). At Qawra/Dwejra, Posidonia oceanica beds occur at il-Port behind Fungus Rock.
The occurrence and distribution of flora and fauna vary according to the depth and habitat, and include sea-cucumbers, anemones, top-shells, crabs, corals, false-corals, sponges and tube-building worms. A rich fish fauna occurs in the Qawra/Dwejra area that includes both species of the water column (pelagic fish) as well as those that live close to the bottom (demersal fish).
Nature Trust’s initiative to work toward the designation of the sea in the Qawra/Dwejra region as a Marine Protected Area is to be commended. By affording protection to these habitats and the species they support, the marine life present in the area may serve as a ‘pool’ to replenish adjoining coastal areas that are over-fished or under adverse pressures from pollution and other forms of human disturbance.
